Icebreaker App

Introduction

In 2018 we had the special assignment of creating an app in 1 month for connecting different UX teams in our organization at our first Design Week conference.

Background

Our design organization had a change in leadership at UX, one of the first activities of our new Chief Design Officer was to unify the team. The main goal of this app was to unify all these different groups as a one big team.

I led this effort as a UX and UI designer working together with 2 other designers (Senior and Junior).

The Opportunity

This project was the perfect opportunity to apply a 3-week design sprint, within that timeframe we achieved to ideate, design, and deliver. I planned in a couple of hours a plan to get to this goal on time.

I had to plan ahead in order to hit the deadline of this project and stick to the plan.

Defining the Game

We had a brainstorming session where we pass through different options on how to make connections, yes, one of those options was actually something like tinder. Fortunately we discarded that idea.

We had also to connect with the vision our new leadership was bringing to our organization and we discovered that he was huge fan of legos, there was where the idea of a game app was born.

Setting the tone

I defined the set and tone of the visuals including illustrations and color scheme. The participants of the annual conference were from these 6 cities.

The idea of the game was to answer a set of secret questions that each of the participants had already answered when signing up in the app.

The participants where rewarded with badges when completing a number of correct answers (i.e. meeting 10 persons from Mexico)

Complete flow of the simple but effective app which was a total success in helping the team to get to know each other by starting conversations.

In 2019 I had the opportunity to do a revamp of the app by improving some of the elements of the original app.

Learnings

  • My team and I won the confidence on work effectively

  • We started to shape our own process

  • We had a wonderful development team
